POSITION SUMMARY
The Information Development (I.D.) team is part of the Retail Systems department. The unit participates in many different initiatives where delivering information is critical to the success of a project. This unit consists of team members who provide services to different areas in IT. Using a variety of media, the I.D. team creates user reference materials, online help, process documentation and many other information deliverables. The unit provides technical translation services so our French retail users’ needs are met.
Apart from the ongoing projects you will be involved with, you will also participate in team initiatives that drive process improvements to ensure that our end users have the information they need, when they need it. This unit focuses on teamwork to provide superior service to our customers, who include IT professionals, retail cashiers and computer operators and Dealers.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Designs, writes, maintains and translates easy-to-understand user documentation for all applications on the AS/400 and POS systems following rigorous content and style requirements. Provides these skills to cross-functional projects and other technologies as required. This includes addressing business requirements such as screen design, report design, application flow, training materials, system messages, display files, reports, online help, field definitions, system procedural indexes, catalogues, etc.
- Analyzes and defines user needs and creates documentation solutions using various tools. Interviews technical specialists to determine documentation content and facilitates documentation review meetings.
- Provides QA function to monitor standards for the design of applications as well as the accuracy and completeness of what the user receives.
- Participates in bi-weekly team meetings and produces regular status reports. Participates in team and strategy development.
- Creates, maintains and uses standards and guidelines for all user documentation to maintain a common look and feel to all documentation produced. Writes modular-style documentation for single-sourcing and translation requirements.
- Writes, edits and translates various materials produced for stores by Retail Systems staff (messages, “Ask the HelpDesk” newsletter, Dealer communications, etc).
- Coordinates the production, distribution and management of documentation, which involves the placement of documentation in a centrally accessible browser-based repository.
Qualifications
· Rotates the position of “release coordinator” with other team members. This role acts as a central point of contact for tracking information, handling release issues and providing information to various participants.
· Coordinates the entry of terminology into a computer-aided translation tool.
· Provides consultation services to IT staff in documentation design, structure, format and content.
· Provides support to projects for communication needs.
· Researches and evaluates new developments in technical writing and content management.
· Other duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS
- University degree/college diploma majoring in technical writing/translation, minoring in computer studies or equivalent experience.
- Related experience includes 3-5 years writing, editing and translating a variety of technical documents, experience in managing documentation from conception to production and distribution, and experience in desktop publishing using a variety of software. Some business experience (1-2 years) would be an asset.
