Business Intelligence (BI) Specialist
Overview
The Business Intelligence (BI) Specialist’s role is to strategically design and implement BI solutions that meet the needs of internal business stakeholders. This includes gathering requirements, designing, and rolling out BI solutions to end users. These solutions would encompass comprehensive back-end functionality in the form of data cubes, or warehouses, and complete front-end dashboards tailored to user requirements.
Ensuring data integrity and single source of truth is paramount when building and deploying solutions. A customer-centric disposition is required to truly understand business user requirements.
The Business Intelligence Specialist is also responsible for ensuring high levels of BI availability through support functions and in-depth testing.
Responsibilities
Strategy & Planning
- Assess and cultivate long-term strategic goals for BI development in conjunction with end users, managers, clients, and other stakeholders.
Operational Management
- Direct, organize, and lead projects in the implementation and use of BI software tools and systems.
- Lead the integration efforts for merging BI platforms with enterprise systems and applications.
- Design, code, test, and document all new or modified BI systems, applications, and programs.
- Develop the semantic layer, metadata, reports, and report definitions.
- Develop graphs and portal interfaces.
- Assist in the design of databases and data warehouses to ensure interoperability with BI solutions.
- Analyze user requirements and, based on findings, design functional specifications for BI front-end applications.
- Produce ETL design guidelines to ensure a manageable ETL infrastructure for the BI system.
- Conduct job duties and responsibilities according to the organization’s business systems development methodology and/or its Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodology.
- Design and deliver end-user training and training materials; provide technical support as necessary.
- Troubleshoot BI tools, systems, and software; performance-tune these applications as necessary.
- Act as evangelist for BI benefits across the organization; promote BI usage to relevant departments.
Position Requirements
Formal Education & Certification
- College diploma or university degree in the field of computer science, information systems, or computer engineering.
- Certified Business Intelligence Professional (CBIP) or similar is an asset.
Knowledge & Experience
- Minimum of 3 years’ direct work experience.
- Expertise with one or more visualization tools such as Sisense, Tableau, Power BI, or others.
- Expertise in data modelling and analysis, and design of data cubes and warehouses.
- Experience with tier-one applications, databases, and data warehouses, such as MS SQL Server, Crystal, SSRS, and so on.
- Strong ability to analyze user requirements and build front-end BI applications according to specifications.
- Knowledge of various scripting languages.
- Strong understanding of relational database structures, theories, principles, and practices.
- Demonstrated ability with MS Windows and UNIX operating systems.
- Demonstrated ability with various ETL tools.
- Full project management and development life cycle experience.
- In-depth technical knowledge of network, PC, and platform operating systems, including Windows Server.
- Good knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws.

This is a permanent position located in downtown Toronto with a salary of $70,000.00 – $75,000.00 per annum.
