Lead Fibre Optic Splicer
The Lead Fibre Optic Splicer performs fibre optic fusion and splicing work according to supervisor instructions, project plans and established procedures. The role includes jobsite preparation, fusion execution, testing, as-built documentation updates, and ongoing guidance of the apprentice fusion splicer.
Responsibilities
- Splicing, fusion, testing and documentation of aerial and underground fibre optic networks
- Training and operational supervision of an apprentice fusion splicer
- Review the project file on the tablet, confirm instructions with the supervisor, prepare the required material, and complete regulatory checks on the truck and aerial lift, as applicable
- Retrieve aerial or underground network splice enclosures safely, using a ladder or aerial lift according to site conditions
- Open splice enclosures, prepare cables, clean tubes and fibres, install cable sealing membranes, and organize fibres in the tray
- Count and verify fibre, install splice protectors, perform fusion splicing, return spliced fibres to the tray and close the splice enclosures
- Perform OTDR traces, power meter tests, test unit calibration and record results for transmission to management
- Update annotations in the tablet, document as-built information, record measurements, and add photos when required.
Qualifications
- 5 years of experience in a similar fibre optic splicing position
- 2 years of experience managing junior team members
- Master fusion methods, fibre optic networks, installation, maintenance, execution, testing, and analysis methods
- Perform technical troubleshooting on fibre optic networks
- Hold, as assets, FOA, APSAM confined space, CPR, health and safety and traffic control training
- Experience training apprentice fusion splicers, explaining procedures and validating the quality of execution
- Ability/interest to work at multiple job sites across Montreal, Quebec and parts of Quebec
